Since 1994 our company values have been Passion, Unity, Servanthood, Humility, Integrity, Thankfulness. The story below is written by one of our closest long-time friends. It describes the journey taken by a young man, not sure of what he wanted to do in his life but knew that there was a purpose for him. This is Dr. Gary’s story of him finding purpose in life.
Medicine a mean mistress and a wonderful ministry. In my life I’ve enjoyed many amazing influences. The most important being my family, my friends, my coaches and my teachers. When I was in college I met the one who would become the most important influence in my life, Jesus Christ. I remember the most exciting aspect of a life with Christ was that he had a plan for my life and I could see the truth of his words, “without a vision my people perish.” Knowing that God had a plan for me gave me the confidence to pursue not my desires but a greater good.
When I first went to college I always say I had no idea what I wanted to do but the one thing I was sure I did not want to do was medicine. My father, a well-known cardiologist and pioneer in his field, who I admired and respected greatly, had many wonderful influences on my life. However, seeing his devotion and commitment to medicine gave me pause, as I wanted more in life than simply a vocation to be proud of that would bless me financially. Basically, I just didn’t want to work that hard.
My father and I shared an intense interest in people, a desire to understand what motivates them, and a joy in serving especially those in need and with little ability to help themselves.
Through a series of supernatural events which, would take more time than this allows God, opened doors allowing me to pursue a career in medicine, and in turn medicine has opened the door to love and serve others in a way that hopefully blesses them and gives me fulfillment and joy. It was a wise man who said, do what you love, and you’ll never have to work another day in your life. And medicine has been that for me.
I’ve had the joy of doing many different things in my medical career. From Third World medicine in the Amazon jungle to 30 years in the emergency room to delivering hundreds of babies and to holding the hands of the greatest generation as they transition out of this world into the next. I love people, all types, the young, the old, the kind, the miserable, the hostile, the helpless and the unseen. I understand God loves them and they all need love, respect, kindness and hope. That’s what I try to help people see and feel when I care for them.
My patients ask many things of me from making them better to helping them escape these mortal bonds. I always tell them. The Lord and I have an understanding. He does the healing and the killing and I do the billing, I don’t get in his business and he doesn’t get in mine. It’s a joke of course but with a lot of truth. I realize I can’t heal anyone that’s above my pay grade, but I just hope the Good Lord will give me the wisdom to help my patients along this journey we call life, with a little more grace, kindness, peace, comfort and understanding for themselves and others.
